Sheriff's deputy shoots man in northeast Alabama

Associated Press
FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say an Alabama man is in critical condition at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., after they say he threatened to kill himself and refused to drop a gun.
DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said deputies found the Mentone man waiving a gun and threatening to kill himself around 7 p.m. Monday.
Authorities say the 45-year-old man refused to drop his weapon, and an officer shot him with a stun gun but it was ineffective.
Sheriff's officials say the man then began to raise his weapon at the officer who tried to use the stun gun. Harris said the deputy shot at the man, and hit him twice.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports the man was in critical condition at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
