Facebook gives the News Feed a makeover, users get angry

Facebook
The Facebook News Feed now adjusts to show you top and most recent posts based on when and how frequently you're checking the Social Network. There is now also a real-time "ticker" that shows you what's happening right this second.
When I logged on to Facebook this morning, I saw several variations of "Yo, dawg! We heard you like Facebook, so we put Facebook in the upper right corner of your Facebook so you can Facebook while you Facebook." posted by my friends. I chuckled. And then I wanted to weep — because this silly joke could not have been a more accurate description of what I was seeing.
(For those unfamiliar with the "Yo, dawg..." meme, it got its start with MTV's "Pimp My Ride" — a TV show in which cars in poor condition were given custom makeovers. At the end of several episodes, one of the hosts — rapper Xzibit — turned to the owners of the vehicles and muttered a recursive statement along the lines of “We heard you like TV, so we put a TV in your car so you can watch TV while you drive." It didn't take long for Internet commenters to start mimicking the phrasing in macro images.)
The reason my friends were making these jokes is because Facebook decided to give the News Feed a makeover in an attempt to make sure that you're always seeing the posts most relevant to you:
Now, News Feed will act more like your own personal newspaper. You won't have to worry about missing important stuff. All your news will be in a single stream with the most interesting stories featured at the top. If you haven't visited Facebook for a while, the first things you'll see are top photos and statuses posted while you've been away. They're marked with an easy-to-spot blue corner.
Facebook
This change means that — chronological order be darned! — posts which are determined to be "top stories" by Facebook will show up first in your News Feed, followed by the "most recent" links. Additionally, a new real-time "ticker" in the upper right corner of the homepage will keep you posted on things by showing updates, comments, shares, and so on instantly.
Facebook
Does that sound like information overload?
Based on a quick glance through my friends' posts and at Twitter, many users think so.
Despite the folks at Facebook explaining that they have our best intentions in mind, users don't appear happy about the convoluted new homepage — nor the fact that Facebook is controlling what they're seeing more than they'd like.
Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much we can do about this latest News Feed makeover (though switching the language option to UK English or Pirate did temporarily bring back the old News Feed for some people), but — for whatever it's worth — Facebook does offer some suggestions on making it slightly tolerable:
If you have a wider screen, slide the grey bar between ticker and chat up or down to adjust how many updates you see at a time. To control who can see your updates anywhere on Facebook, including in ticker and News Feed, adjust your sharing control or apps settings.

Breaking News: Inexpensive New Software has the Giant Cable and Satellite TV Companies Running Scared

Park City, UT - Should the big cable and satellite companies really be scared of a tiny little software company from the midwest?

If you ask Amy Middleton, a middle class housewife and mother of 3 from Toledo, OH, they should be.

For Amy, the third increase in her cable bill in less than 12 months was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The economic recession had recently hit home for Amy when her employer of 9 years, a large well-known insurance company did some major downsizing and let her go.

Her husband Michael now became their only source of income and they had no choice but to start looking for areas where they could cut back on their expenses.

Non-essentials such as cable tv, now with the latest price increase at a cost of over over $117 per month, would have to be the first to go.

Katie says, "At first I thought it would actually be a positive thing for our family. We would get to spend more quality time together without the distraction of the TV, but try explaining that to 3 little girls. When they kept asking why they weren't being allowed to watch their favorite shows, and we had to try and explain to them that it was because times were tough, they just didn't understand. They felt that they were being punished and it broke my heart. I didn't know what to do."

Then one day while Amy was surfing the internet, she stumbled across an advertisement for Satellite TV on the PC, that stopped her in her tracks.

"I read the ad, and at first I was extremely skeptical because it said you could get over 2100 satellite channels, with no monthly fees, through any internet connection. It all sounded too good to be true, but since it had a risk free guarantee and cost only a tiny fraction of a typical single month's cable bill, I suspended my disbelief and gave it a shot"

What Amy discovered turned out to be the answer to all her family's entertainment problems.

She downloaded the software and within 5 minutes had access to 20 times more programming than with her previous $117 per month cable service.

"It's just sickening to think about how much money we were throwing away every month on cable service, when we could have had so much more, for so much less all along." Amy adds
Satellite TV for the PC is an inexpensive, risk free software program than anyone can use to view over 2100 high quality satellite tv channels right on their computer, through any internet connection.
Amy went on to say that with a simple connecting cable, she can hook right into her existing TV set for a full screen experience, and that she even made money by referring all her friends to the software, and getting paid referral commissions by the company.

Amy shared her tips for getting everything up and running quickly. Following the steps she provides below is all you need to do to get started:

Step 1: Go to Satellite TV for your PC and click the big red 'Download Now' button.

Step 2: Enter your information, pay the small, one time fee, and follow the directions for downloading the software.

Step 3: Tell all your friends about it, and get paid!

"I really hope more people start taking advantage of this, and stop senselessly wasting their hard earned money on monthly service fees." says Middleton

Yeah I found this about 5 weeks ago after seeing a piece about it on my local news. Funny seeing this news article, I didn’t know anyone else knew about this but it seems lots of people are sick wasting money every month. It's still hard to believe all these channels are really available.

@Juggadeesh, stop writing in all caps dude, chill out. And YES it does work, I’ve been a similar service for about two months now, but it only gave access to a little over 1000 channels. Earlier this week I paid the small activation fee and downloaded it to my PC with 30 HD monitor. I'm stunned at not only the insane number of channels you get from all around the world but the picture quality on my monitor – my wife still can't believe we no longer have a Direct TV bill :-)

My friend Brian showed this to me last month. I have to say that if you're expecting over 2000 channels in high definition you are going to be disappointed as that is NOT what you're going to get. You will get good quality on many channels, great on others, and not so great on some...so don't have unrealistic expectations. Overall though, all things considered, it's a no brainer vs paying over $1000/year for cable. I’m happy he showed me....I actually set it up on 3 different computers and all work nicely.

Dothan,Laurel Oaks employee Jeffery Scott McCarter, sentenced to 30 years for raping 15 yr female patient

The mother of a convicted child molester collapsed in the courtroom on Wednesday and repeatedly screamed out "oh God, oh God" as the judge sentenced her son to 30 years in prison.
Circuit Court Judge Michael Conaway sentenced Jeffery Scott McCarter, 40, to the prison term for the rape of a 15-year-old girl, who was a patient at Laurel Oaks Behavioral Health Center, where McCarter worked.
A jury found McCarter guilty of felony second-degree rape last month.

“You abused that trust by preying upon a troubled child,” Conaway said.
After Conaway announced the sentence, several of McCarter’s family members burst into tears, including his mother.

Assistant District Attorney Andy Robinson asked the court for the maximum sentence. He said McCarter faced 15 years to life in prison, which was an enhanced sentence because he had two prior felony convictions. Robinson said both of those convictions were drug charges.

“He was in a position of power,” Robinson said. “He was in charge of taking care of her at Laurel Oaks.”
Robinson said the offense happened in a linen closet at the facility, which is located on East Cottonwood Road in Dothan

According to the facility’s website, the center is a 100-bed psychiatric hospital and residential treatment center for children and adolescents, ages four to 18.

McCarter apologized to the court for his actions just before Conaway announced the sentence.
“I do a lot in the community. I made a bad decision,” McCarter said. “I would like to have a chance to reestablish myself in the community.”

Attorney Derek Yarbrough asked the court for a minimum sentence. He said his client was fired from Laurel Oaks after the incident.
“He’s trying to better himself,” Yarbrough said. “There’s no way he can undo it and take it back.”
Bridgett McCarter, Jeffery’s wife, who testified on behalf of her husband, said her husband had completed a degree as an avionics technician.

“I’m asking for leniency,” Bridgett McCarter said. “I do know Scott is a very good person. He’s always been a quiet and sensible person.”

Troy Davis executed, maintained innocence until end

JACKSON, GA (WTVM) - Troy Davis's execution comes 22 years after his world collided with an off-duty police officer. This same case has grabbed the world's attention. Prison officials told the media in Jackson, GA that Troy Davis was executed at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday. Davis, 42, died by lethal injection.

He was convicted of killing off-duty police officer and Columbus-native, Mark MacPhail, in 1989. The Savannah police officer was 27 at the time of his murder - Davis was 20 years old.

Just 30 minutes before Davis was officially pronounced dead Wednesday night, the U.S. Supreme Court sent back an order refusing to block the execution.

His execution was scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., but once the hour arrived, prison officials waited for the high court's decision. The delay was the result of lawyers for Troy Davis filing an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court.

As news of the delay spread, Davis's supporters cheered. However, the news did not sit well with MacPhail's mother in Columbus, GA who called the delay, "ridiculous".
Davis refused his last meal and chose not to take a sedative that would put him to sleep before the concoction of lethal drugs was injected in to his body.
Minutes before he would die, the warden asked if Davis wanted to say anything, "Davis lifted his head up, looked at that first row, and made a statement in which he said, he wanted to talk to the MacPhail family, and said that despite the situation you're in, he was not the one who did it," said Jon Lewis, WSB Radio reporter and a witness to the execution, "He asked his family - his family and friends to keep praying; to keep working and keep the faith."

Davis maintained his innocence until the very end, telling the family of Mark MacPhail that he was not responsible for the officer's death and that he did not have a gun, "I did not personally kill your son, father. I am innocent."

Davis urged the case needed further investigation, "The incident that night was not my fault...dig deeper into this case to find out the truth."
There were two individuals in the death chamber with him, a member of the medical staff and an unidentified person.

Amongst the last words uttered by Davis were thoughts directed to prison staff, "May God have mercy on your souls."

Witnesses told the media Wednesday night that the atmosphere was somber – adding it was one of the most eerie feelings they have ever felt.  As Troy Davis' took his last breath, the only thing they could hear in the room was the air conditioner.

The execution process lasted 15 minutes.

Members of the MacPhail family did not comment following Wednesday night's execution.

Davis has been scheduled to die three times before – most recently in October 2008 when the execution was halted by the U.S. Supreme Court, just two hours before it was scheduled to take place.
"The killing of innocence, such as Troy Anthony Davis, however legal it may in the state of Georgia, however legal it may be in the eyes of the Supreme Court of the United States, this sort of legalized lynching is not right, said Thomas Ruffin, attorney for Troy Davis," He [Davis] called upon the MacPhail family, his family and friends, and all of those who want what is right to prevail and what is wrong to be crushed, to investigate this case honestly, thoroughly, and find in the truth that he didn't kill Officer MacPhail, but someone else did."
Davis's attorney added, "It wasn't just the MacPhail family that has suffered through this entire process, but the Davis's also lost a son."
This case has drawn quite a bit of attention from the public.  Several hundred supporters of Davis gathered outside the state prison in Jackson, GA as hundreds of law enforcement looked on in riot gear.

The gathering was mostly quiet, featuring candles, prayers and songs. Only three people were taken away in handcuffs after crossing a crowd barrier.

In addition, supporters of the slain officer were on hand.

Protests also were held at the Capitol in Atlanta and City Hallin Savannah, outside the White House and in Paris and London.
