Dothan Police --Heather Parker, white female, 28yrs old arrested 1st degree theft of property

On October 6, 2011 the Dothan Police Department made a felony arrest following a recent investigation. Police say Heather Parker was arrested on theft charges after stealing from her mechanic. The case investigation revealed the victim was working on the suspect’s car at his home and allowed her to wait inside his residence where she would be out of the heat. While inside, Parker took several expensive pieces of jewelry which she then sold. The case has been closed following yesterday’s arrest.

·        Heather Parker, white female, 28 years of age, of Glenwood Street was arrested and charged with First Degree Theft of Property with a $5,000 bond. 

Dothan Police Department responded to a firearm assault just after 9:30 p.m

On October 6, 2011 the Dothan Police Department responded to a firearm assault just after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Park Avenue and Fortner Street. Upon arrival, police learned three victims had been fired at by three suspects. Two of the victims were struck and received non-life threatening injuries, the first being struck in the right leg and the second being struck in the buttocks. The victims told police the suspects fired shots at them and then fled; all involved parties were on foot. The suspects were described as black male juveniles wearing all black. The first suspect was described as being 5’9 and 150 pounds while the second and third suspects were described as being 5’5 and 150 pounds. Police are asking anyone with information about the case or identity of the suspect to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.

School Bus and Semi, With Fire, In Henry County

HENRY COUNTY:   Emergency officials throughout Henry County scrambled to the scene of a school bus and a semi wreck. Reports to the Abbeville Police Communications Center, vehicle on fire. Students were on the bus.

The wreck was on Henry County Road 68 in the Edwin Community. You take Highway 10 from Abbeville to County Road 75, turn right. Travel to where County Road 68 branches off and about two miles up. Almost in Barbour County.

Emergency units throughout the county, Sheriff Will Maddox, Henry County E-911 Co-coordinator, Abbeville Fire - Rescue, Headland Fire - Rescue, Echo Rescue, Texasville Fire, all rolled to the scene. Abbeville Mayor Ryan Blalock rolled to the scene. Barbour County Sheriff Leroy Upshaw dispatched deputies to the scene. Alabama State Troopers, Trooper Tracey McCord rolled to the scene.

When units were responding they could see the smoke from the fire on Highway 10.

When emergency units arrived there were 14 to 18 students that were riding th school bus. The semi log truck was engulfed. The tractor portion was a total loss. All children on the bus escaped injuries. The school bus driver was transported to a Dothan hospital by Abbeville Rescue with non life threatening injuries. The semi truck driver escaped injury.

The students were releaed to their parents. The Henry County School Transportation Director, Dennis Brand was on the scene.

HATS OFF to the Henry County Emergency network. This was a real event and they all responded making sure the children and adults were safe and cared for. The Abbeville Police Communications Center rolled off what information they were presented with, had all necessary help rolling to handle the situation.

The Henry County leaders, Sheriff Maddox, Mayor Blalock, Henry County Transporation Brand all responded. The system worked!

Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, a leader of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the 1950's, passed away

The Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, a leader of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the 1950's, passed away Wednesday morning after a long illness. He was 89.
Sources tell FOX6 News Shuttlesworth died at 10:28 a.m.
Shuttlesworth, born in Mount Meigs, AL, in 1922, was very active as a preacher of the gospel and civil rights in Birmingham during the 1950's. He served as pastor of Birmingham's Bethel Baptist Church. He was beaten and arrested numerous times for his activism and was the target of several acts of violence, including the bombing of his house on Christmas Day in 1956 and a beating in front of the old Phillips High School in 1957.

Shuttlesworth formed the Alabama Christian Rights Movement and helped create the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, of which he was secretary for many years.

Shuttlesworth left Alabama in 1961 and moved to Cincinatti to become pastor of Revelation Baptist Church and, later, Greater Light Baptist Church, where he continued to work against racism. However, he frequently returned to Alabama to continue efforts to end racism. Shuttlesworth organized numerous lunch counter sit-ins and bus boycotts during the 1960's. He also helped organize the Freedom Rides and Project C.

In 2000, Shuttlesworth was awarded the President's Citizens Medal by President Clinton. He returned to Birmingham after his retirement in 2007.

In October 2008, the Birmingham Airport Authority changed the name of the Birmingham International Airport to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Dothan police responds to another armed robbery of person on Chickasaw & Montana Street

On October 4, 2011 the Dothan Police Department responded to an armed robbery of a person just before 9:00 p.m. in the intersection of Chickasaw Street and Montana Street. Upon arrival, police spoke with two male victims who stated they were in a vehicle stopped at a stop sign when approached by four black males. The victims stated one suspect was armed with a shotgun which he used to strike one of the victims with causing a moderate laceration above the victim’s eye. The suspects took U.S. Currency from the vehicle before fleeing on foot. Investigators were investigating a separate robbery at the time and were called to the scene to take over the case. Investigators say the two robberies do not appear to be connected in anyway. The suspects in this incident were described as four black males, two wearing white shirts and two wearing black shirts, one with dred lock styled hair. Police are asking anyone with information about the case or identity of the suspect to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.

On October 4, 2011 the Dothan Police Department responded to an armed robbery of a person in the 300 block of Jeff Street just after 8:00 p.m. Upon arrival, police learned the victim was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint by two male suspects. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the incident. Police are following several strong leads in this case but are asking anyone with information about the case or identity of the suspect to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.

Dothan police arrests purse snatchers from local doctors office

On October 4, 2011 the Dothan Police Department received a report of a theft on West Main Street. The victim told police her purse had been stolen while at a local doctor’s office. The victim described a male and female that where together, also in the office at the time of the theft. The victim also described the vehicle they were driving and strongly believed they were responsible for the theft. A description of the vehicle and suspects was issued and a short time later, an alert traffic officer responded to an unrelated call involving persons matching the earlier description. During the course of the call, the officer located the stolen property belonging to the victim in the suspects’ vehicle. Both suspects were arrested for theft.

·        David Marsala, male, 32 years of age, of Eufaula, Alabama was arrested and charged with Second Degree Theft of Property with a $15,000 bond.

·        Jennifer Durbin, white female, 29 years of age, of Eufaula, Alabama was arrested and charged with Second Degree Theft of Property with a $15,000 bond. 

Jury finds Henderson guilty of capital murder

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – The fate of Gregory Lance Henderson is in the hands of a Lee County jury. The jury began its deliberations about an hour before noon Tuesday.

Henderson, a Georgia-native, is accused of running over and killing Lee County sheriff's deputy James Anderson in 2009.

Henderson looked surprisingly calm inside the courtroom. He was escorted out to await the verdict in another room.

As he walked out he acknowledged several members of his family and friends that are here supporting him.

Meanwhile, the widow of Deputy James Anderson is surrounded by her family, friends and a courtroom full of law enforcement officers from the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Auburn Police Department and the Opelika Police Department.

Defense Attorney, Jeremy Armstrong told the jury Tuesday in his closing statements that his client did do something wrong. However, he says the defendant, Henderson, did not have the intent needed for capital murder. Armstrong added Henderson should be convicted on one of the lesser charges.
In closing, the assistant district attorney told the jury voluntary intoxication is never a defense to a charge unless it is so extreme that it rises to the level that the defendant is no longer conscious that he is committing a crime.  She said, Henderson appropriately followed and obeyed commands just after the incident when Deputy Katie Bonham was taking him into custody. The assistant district attorney added Henderson was not impaired and he knew the difference between right and wrong.

HEAD ON COLLISION ROWLAND & MILGEN RD COLUBUS GA

Around 6:30 Columbus Police and rescue responded to a  head on collision with 2 vehicles
One driver sustains severe injuries including concussion and severe face trauma and was transported to the Medical Center.
At this time reports states that she is in stable condition at this time.

Collin Bennett, black male, 18 Arrested for theft of firearm

Just before 1:00a.m. this morning the Dothan Police Department responded to a theft call at a residence in the 3000 block of Flynn Road. The victim told police that he had given an acquaintance, Collin Bennett, permission to get cigarettes out of his vehicle. He said after several minutes Bennett had not returned so he went to his vehicle to check on him but said he was gone. The victim immediately noticed his firearm case (kept in the vehicle) was open in the backseat and the firearm was missing. Police went to the home of Bennett where following a consensual search, they located the firearm. Bennett was arrested and the property returned to the owner.

·        Collin Bennett, black male, 18 years of age, of Flynn Road was arrested and charged with Second Degree Theft of Property with a bond being established later today.
