Dothan Police chase leads to shots fired by police . Subject Deceased on scene

On June 28, 2012 the Dothan Police Department was involved in a vehicle pursuit which ended in an officer involved shooting. Following standard procedures, the investigation into yesterday’s incident will be handled by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation however Dothan Police are able to comment on the events which precipitated the shooting.

While on routine patrol, a Dothan Police officer initiated an investigative traffic stop in the vicinity of Whiddon Street. Upon activating lights and sirens, signaling the driver to stop, the driver fled leading police on a pursuit that traveled westbound on Whiddon Street to Houston Street and continued westbound on Houston Street. As the suspect vehicle approached Montgomery Highway, the suspect vehicle turned into the parking lot at 1509 Montgomery Highway where he struck a car. Police officers exited their vehicles ordering the driver to stop at which time the vehicle accelerated toward an officer placing him in immediate danger. The officer fired shots at the oncoming suspect while moving to avoid being struck. The vehicle traveled across Montgomery Highway where it crashed through the side of a business striking an employee at 1558 Montgomery Highway.  Medical staff stated the employee struck by the moving vehicle sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision.

The suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Houston County Coroners Office. The suspect has been identified as Christopher Jerome Thomas, black male, 22 years of age, of Dothan, Alabama. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation quickly responded to the scene and will handle the investigation by request of the Dothan Police Department.

SHOOTING: One soldier dead, two others wounded at Fort Bragg









FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WECT/WBTV) - An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting at a North Carolina Army Base.

One soldier from the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade is dead and two others are wounded, according to a news release from Fort Bragg. The shooting took place on base Thursday around 3:30 p.m.
According to the Army Times, the solider who was fatally shot was a senior officer.
The shooter was injured and is in custody, according to Fort Bragg officials. A third soldier was reportedly injured by a ricocheting bullet.
During a unit safety brief a soldier shot another member of the unit and then turned the weapon on himself, the release stated. The shooter was injured and is in custody. A third soldier who was in the area was slightly wounded.
"This is a tragedy for our community. We don't yet know the reasons for the shooting, but are working with the unit and the affected families to help them through this difficult period," said Col. Kevin Arata, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg Public Affairs Officer, in a statement.
"Our prayers are with those who have been affected by this terrible incident," Arata said.
Fort Bragg law enforcement and emergency responders secured the scene of the shooting, which was at the corner of Letterman and Armistead streets.
Special Agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating, according to Army officials. No motive has been determined for this case at this time.
Notification of the next of kin is underway.
Drivers and pedestrians are urged to avoid the historic district of Fort Bragg until further notice. The base is not under lockdown.

Dothan Police makes narcotics arrest while in search for Kasondra Strickland for warrants

On June 26, 2012, Dothan Police patrolmen went to a residence in the 100 block of Woods Drive in an attempt to make contact with Kasondra Strickland who had outstanding warrants for her arrest. Upon arrival, Officers met with the homeowner, Abby Newton. Newton gave officers consent to enter the residence and search for Strickland. While inside the residence officers saw several pieces of drug paraphernalia and illegal narcotics to include syringes, a digital scale, a bag containing Lortab prescription pills and a crystal like substance wrapped in tinfoil, which was later determined to be sugar cubes containing Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD). While searching for Strickland officers also found Leigh Manning hiding inside a closet and discovered Manning was in possession of methamphetamine. Strickland was then located and placed under arrest. Narcotic Investigators responded to the scene and following a complete investigation, made a total of four arrests for various narcotic charges.



·        Kasondra Kay Strickland, white female, 23 years of age, of New Brockton, Alabama was arrested and charged with outstanding misdemeanor warrants, Drug Trafficking and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with bonds totaling $75,000 plus misdemeanor fees.

·        Abby Gail Newton, white female, 26 years of age, of Woods Drive was arrested and charged with Drug Trafficking and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with bonds totaling $75,000.

·        Leigh Dehannon Manning, white female, 41 years of age, of Skipper Road was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with a $15,000 bond.




Can you help idenify these men wanted for burglary

On May 17, 2012 The Dothan Police Department released a video to our community in hopes of identifying a man wanted for burglary. Police had gotten the video that morning after responded to a commercial burglary at Dakota Coffee Works located at 277 West Main Street. Upon arrival, police learned the business had been broken into between the close of business the previous night and opening that morning. Although the surveillance camera captured clear photographs of the suspect committing the burglary, investigators received no information regarding the identity of the suspect.  

On June 20, 2012 The Dothan Police Department responded to a second commercial burglary at Dakota Coffee Works located at 277 West Main Street. Upon arrival, police learned the business had once again been broken into between the close of business the previous night and opening that morning. Surveillance camera captured clear photographs that show the same suspect from the May 17 incident was also responsible for the latest burglary. The new photographs provided what police are calling highly identifiable marks including pictures which depict a “Yin and Yang” tattoo on the inner right forearm, and a large cross on the left forearm.







On June 26, 2012 Investigators sharing photographs were surprised to see photographs of what is believed to be the same man wanted in connection with at least two additional commercial burglaries in Dothan. Those investigations are ongoing at this time and investigators have not yet released those locations.





Investigators say that identifying and apprehending this man is important to protect commercial establishments from being further victimized. A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of this burglar is being offered through CRIME$TOPPERS and Dakota Coffee Works.
