Facebook crimes include terrorist threats to two area schools

It is a website most people use every single day, but some use it not only for good but to commit crimes.  School shootings have actually been threatened at two area schools, but police were able to prevent that crime thanks to Facebook.
Recently, there were threats made at both Central Freshman Academy and South Girard School in Phenix City. Many teachers, students, and parents never even heard about it because it took place online.
Lt. Jason Whitten with the Phenix City Police Department said, "The ones we've had recently is where someone has threatened to come to the school and threatened to do bodily harm to someone or several people. Saying things like ‘I'm going to come to school and shoot a bunch of people' or ‘I'm going to come to school and kill a bunch of people.' That right there causes disruption in the school and that is part of the terrorist threats law and that itself is a crime."
It's a fairly new crime, but Lt. Whitten says it carries very serious consequences, "Terrorist threats on Facebook towards schools and students in the school. We've had two this year where juveniles have been arrested for making terrorist threats."
The crime is a class C felony, meaning the suspect could spend up to five years in prison.
"The biggest thing is people in the heat of moment typing something out and hitting send. That stays there forever, and the damage is done," Whitten explained to News Leader 9.
Police are conducting complete investigations into these online crimes that take place in their area.
Whitten added, "The most difficult part is jurisdiction, where did the actual crime happen? The internet is everywhere and to commit a crime here in Russell County or Phenix City, Alabama, we need to establish that's where it took place."
Phenix City police have also solved some crimes due to what people post on Facebook. For instance, some burglars have posted pictures of the items they have stolen, and some parents have uploaded photos of their children that have helped police prove child abuse.

Tornadoes rip thru Dallas/Fort Worth area

Several tornadoes have roared through the Dallas-Fort Worth region and across parts of northeastern Texas.

At least two "large and extremely dangerous" tornadoes ripped across the Dallas-Forth Worth area this afternoon, collapsing roofs, tearing down power lines and tossing trailers around like toys, the National Weather Service says.

Several other twisters were reported as violent storms moved north through the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

The weather service says "considerable damage" has been reported near Cleburne, south of Fort Worth, and Lancaster, south of Dallas. Local television footage shows overturned and smashed semi-trailers on the ground in the southern portion of Dallas County. Dallas Police spokeswoman Sherri Jeffrey says twisters also have caused damage in the city limits.

A tornado watch — meaning that conditions are ripe for tornadoes to continue to form — was in place for 33 counties in north-central and northeastern Texas until 8 p.m. CDT, the National Weather Service reported

DALLAS | Tue Apr 3, 2012 5:25pm EDT
(Reuters) - Tornadoes tore through the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in Texas on Tuesday, ripping apart buildings, tossing tractor trailer trucks into the air and grounding all planes in the region.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths although the storm was still active.
One tornado tore through the Flying J Truck Plaza in Dallas, grabbing two trailer trucks and tossing them, said truck driver Michael Glennon, who caught the destruction on his video camera as debris swirled through the air.
"The second trailer is ripped to pieces and thrown 50 to 100 feet into the air," he said.
National Weather Service meteorologist Amber Elliott said there were "reports of wall clouds and funnel clouds all over the area. It's an extremely dangerous situation."
All planes were grounded at Dallas-Fort Worth International airport, the eighth busiest in the world, because of reports of storms and tornadoes, American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said.
Dallas-Fort Worth airport spokesman David Magana said officials ordered passengers away from windows and directed them into stairwells and restrooms.
At the nearby Omni Mandalay Las Colinas hotel, tornado sirens sounded, alerting guests to get to safety.
"The hotel has not been evacuated but we do have guests under cover," said a telephone receptionist at 421-room hotel.
