Gasoline: Too much, too little... Who's kidding who?
Gasoline: The Next Big U.S. Export
By Steve Hargreaves@CNNMoney
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The United States is awash in gasoline. So much so, in fact, that the country is exporting a record amount of it.
The country exported 430,000 more barrels of gasoline a day than it imported in September, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That is about twice the amount at the start of the year, and experts and industry insiders say the trend is here to stay.
The United States began exporting gas in late 2008.* For decades prior, starting in 1960, the country used all the gas it produced here plus had to import gas from places in Europe.
But demand for gas has dropped nearly 10% in recent years. It went from a peak of 9.6 million barrels a day in 2007 to 8.8 million barrels today, according to the EIA. ... Story continues here
* Is there a conflict here? Late in 2008 (September) we read reports of gasoline shortages as indicated by the chart below:

Wrongfully jailed Alabama mom may get compensation
FILE - In this April 8, 2009 photo, Bridget Lee poses for a photograph at her home in Carrollton, Ala. Charged with capital murder in the death of her newborn baby in 2006, the longtime church pianist could now be fully vindicated since a review found that the child died of natural causes. Alabama made the first move Tuesday, March 20, 2012 toward paying nearly $119,000 to the church pianist who spent nine months in jail facing a capital murder charge that resulted from a botched autopsy on her newborn son. MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Alabama took the first step Tuesday toward paying nearly $119,000 to a church pianist and mother of two who was wrongfully jailed for nine months on a capital murder charge because of a botched autopsy on her newborn son.
The Senate's General Fund committee unanimously approved the payment Tuesday for Bridget Lee, a 37-year-old from Carrollton in west Alabama.
"I feel blessed they are considering that, but there is no amount of money that will get my life back," she said in a phone interview.
Alabama law allows the state Legislature to compensate people who are wrongfully incarcerated. The district attorney who initially prosecuted Lee, Chris McCool, said he never would have brought the case against her if he had been provided the correct facts from the beginning. He supports her getting compensated.
"Our job is not just to prosecute and win cases. Our job is to do justice," he said in an interview.
Lee acknowledges the facts looked bad when she was arrested in November 2006.
The bank bookkeeper and Baptist church pianist had an affair in her small west Alabama town of 1,000, got pregnant and tried to keep it secret. She felt sick on Nov. 6, 2006, went home from work and delivered a premature baby in her bathroom. She panicked, placed the newborn in a plastic container and hid it in her vehicle for several days before a co-worker's husband notified authorities.
Lee told investigators the baby was born dead, but a state forensic pathologist ruled the child was suffocated.
"I knew something was wrong because I knew I did not suffocate the baby, but I had no way to prove it," Lee said.
She was indicted for capital murder, which carries the death penalty. She spent nine months in jail and 20 months on home confinement at her parents' home.
During the ordeal, her husband divorced her and got custody of the children and their possessions.
Then her attorney got an independent expert to review the autopsy. His findings led the Alabama Department of Forensic Science to reopen the case and rule the child was stillborn. The department also reviewed dozens of other autopsies that the forensic pathologist performed during a brief stint with the department, but did not alter any of those.
Lee's life is partially back in order. She has a full-time data entry job. She's playing piano again at Aliceville First Baptist Church. And she's engaged.
But she said she only has visitation with her children, ages 8 and 10, every other weekend. And her life will never be normal again because some people will always question what happened.
"I live in a small town, and it will always be there," she said.
The payment to Lee is included in an appropriations measure that must be approved by the full Senate and House, and that must be signed by Gov. Robert Bentley.
The committee's chairman, Republican Sen. Arthur Orr of Decatur, said he expects that to happen because the payment has the backing of House and Senate leaders.
The $118,767 payment would amount to about $50,000 annually for the time she faced the capital murder charge.
"I pray and hope it passes because I lost everything. I lost my children and I lost my reputation," Lee said.

Columbus murder suspect arrested in Florida
By COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)
The suspect in Columbus's latest murder is now being held behind bars in Florida.
Columbus police got a call Saturday evening from the girlfriend of 29-year-old Mark Merritt, the man police say is responsible for the stabbing death of Lakebottom resident Michael Crowley.
The girlfriend told investigators she was on the phone with Merritt, and then she initiated a three-way call with police. Investigators advised Merritt to turn himself in to police for murder. He complied, and around 6 p.m. Saturday evening he walked into the Orlando Police Department in Florida and was placed under arrest.
Merritt is being held in the Orange County Jail, pending extradition to Columbus. Investigators say if Merritt is cooperative, he could be back in Columbus within a matter of days.
Their investigation into the murder of Michael Crowley revealed that Merritt and Crowley had known each other for close to ten years. Police say Crowley would sometimes let Merritt stay in his Lakebottom home when he needed a little help.
Police say the weekend before Crowley was stabbed to death, Merritt was staying with friends in the Atlanta area and they had thrown him out. According to police, Merritt then made contact with Crowley and made arrangements to stay with him for a day or two in Columbus. That's when police say Merritt and Crowley got into some sort of argument, Merritt stabbed Crowley and then stole his Ford Explorer.
Tuesday law enforcement in Cobb County found Crowley's Explorer partially burned. That same night police in Columbus found Michael Crowley stabbed to death in his Lakebottom home.
Merritt has not revealed any motive or further information on the crime he is accused of, and he will remain in the Orange County Jail until he can be transported to the Muscogee County Jail.
