American soul singer and actress Whitney Houston, one of the most decorated female artists of all time, has died aged 48.
Her publicist, Kristen Foster, confirmed her death in the early hours of this morning, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.
Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists at her peak in the 80s and 90s, selling more than 170 million albums. Among her hundreds of awards sat two Emmys and six Grammys as she moved effortlessly from musical hits such as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "Saving All My Love For You" to worldwide movie success with The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale. But her striking voice and image, along with her record sales, became ravaged in recent years by drink and drug abuse. Public appearances became more erratic and she confessed to using cocaine, marijuana and pills leaving her unable to hit the high notes she had done in her prime.
Houston seemed born for greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 60s pop diva Dionne Warwick, and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin. She started singing in church as a child and in her teens, she was a backing singer for Chaka Khan and Jermaine Jackson.
Whitney Houston, her debut album in 1985, sold millions. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. Further hits followed leaving the New York Times to write that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices".
She married soul singer Bobby Brown in 1992, the year that The Bodyguard made her an acting star. But their rocky marriage, during which Brown was arrested several times on charges including domestic abuse, ended in divorce in 2007. Two spells in rehab followed before Houston appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010 to declare herself clean.
Houston briefly reignited her album sales with the 2009 platinum-selling I Look To You, but a disappointing world tour followed.

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, died this afternoon. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said today that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.
She died at the Beverly Hilton hotel. She was apparently found by her on-off boyfriend Ray J in her hotel room, though other reports dispute that account.

A spokesman for the local police department said that emergency services had been called to the hotel at 3.43 this afternoon, arriving minutes later.
Officials rushed to the room on the fourth floor where she was staying as a guest, where they found security staff attempting to revive her.
Life-saving attempts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 3.55pm.
Authorities are currently trying to determine a cause of death, according to the spokesman. It was initially unclear whether or not her death was drug-related, as has been speculated by some.

News of Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night - the Grammy Awards.
It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony.
Houston's longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.
It was due to be held at the Beverly Hilton, which is why Houston was staying at the hotel.

She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Among her hits were How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You and I Will Always Love You. She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies like The Bodyguard.
But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

Her image became tarnished by her well-documented troubles, including her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.
By the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances.
She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
'The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy,' Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

However, she will be remembered not for the troubles she encountered in her last decade, but for her extraordinary voice and star charisma.
Houston was discovered by record label boss Clive Davis, who once said: 'The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club... it was such a stunning impact.
'To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine.'

At her peak, Whitney Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."
She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use.
"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.
She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.
Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.
"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America."
"To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine," he added.
Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with "Whitney Houston," which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. "How Will I Know," "You Give Good Love" and "The Greatest Love of All" also became hit singles.
Another multiplatinum album, "Whitney," came out in 1987 and included hits like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."
The New York Times wrote that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity."
Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the "Soul Train Awards" in 1989.
"Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?" she told Katie Couric in 1996. "You're not black enough for them. I don't know. You're not R&B enough. You're very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them."
Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop's pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.
But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.
"When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place," she told Rolling Stone in 1993. "You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that's their image. It's part of them, it's not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody's angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy."
It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America's sweetheart.
In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with "The Bodyguard." Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.
It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy's record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the "Bodyguard" soundtrack was named album of the year.
She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife." Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, "My Love Is Your Love," in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut "It's Not Right But It's Okay."
But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time "The Preacher's Wife" was released, "(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. ... I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. ... I wasn't happy by that point in time. I was losing myself."
In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.
Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.
She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown's reality show, "Being Bobby Brown," was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared "crack is whack," was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.
Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album "I Look To You." The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.
Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on "Good Morning America" went awry as Houston's voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.
A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Hackers claim attack on Ala. government websites

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Computer hackers claiming to be from the loose-knit group known as Anonymous say they have broken into several Alabama law enforcement and government websites and have stolen the personal information for more than 46,000 people.
In an online news release Friday, the group claimed to have taken Social Security numbers, license plate numbers, phone numbers, addresses and criminal records.
Mobile city spokeswoman Barbara Drummond said Utah authorities alerted officials Thursday night that hackers may be targeting the city. She told The Associated Press that the city shut down its computers to avoid the attack and that the hackers did not gain access to Mobile's servers.
However, hackers did breach the website of the city webmaster, and took data from a recent program offering amnesty to people with outstanding warrants for municipal offenses.
Hackers claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous have launched a spate of attacks on law enforcement websites in recent weeks, hitting such cities as Salt Lake City, Boston, Syracuse, N.Y. and Greece. The collective of activists, pranksters and hackers have also targeted financial institutions such as Visa and MasterCard, as well as the Church of Scientology.
Utah Department of Public Safety spokesman Dwayne Baird said someone phoned in an anonymous tip that Mobile would be targeted, and the department gave the city the heads up. The Salt Lake City Police Department and the Utah Chiefs of Police Association had also been targets of the hackers.
The warrant amnesty information from Mobile had already been made public by the city to encourage people to participate in the amnesty program, Drummond said. She said city technicians are still trying to determine whether some personal information required to log on to that website may have been stolen.
The group says the attack was prompted by what it called Alabama's "racist legislation" targeting illegal immigrants.
"You complain about immigrants costing the state money, however, you do not care about spending the same money to protect your own legal citizens," the news release said.
The group says it will not use the personal information to do damage.
"Because of the possible cost of lives and money to regular citizens, we are deleting this data and are seeking to make it known that you not only have shown zero regard for immigrants, but for the very citizens that live in the great state of Alabama."
Officials in other Alabama cities have said they are not aware of being attacked.
Capt. Mark Drinkard of the Montgomery Police Department said he wasn't aware of any attack on the department's website, but was advising the technology department to protect against any potential break-ins.
Birmingham Police Department Sgt. Johnny Williams said he was also unaware of any attacks to city websites.
Alabama Director of Homeland Security Spencer Collier said in a statement that the department is aware of the situation and the investigation is ongoing.

Man accused of threatening Obama faces new charge

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - (AP) -- An Uzbekistan national charged with threatening the life of President Barack Obama is now accused of providing aid to terrorism.
Federal prosecutors in Alabama filed the new charge Thursday against 22-year-old Ulugbek Kodirov, who was indicted last year in Birmingham.
The charge accuses Kodirov of acquiring weapons and explosives that were intended to be used in an attempt to kill Obama.
Documents show Kodirov has waived prosecution on the earlier indictment. He is due in court for a hearing on Friday afternoon, and records show Kodirov is changing his original plea of not guilty.
His lawyer declined comment.
Kodirov was arrested last July in suburban Birmingham after prosecutors said he obtained a rifle from an undercover agent with plans to kill Obama. Authorities say Kodirov was in the country illegally.

Man drowns after seeing girlfriend's car in river

 By Associated Press

BRIDGEPORT, Ala. Authorities in northeastern Alabama say a man dove into the Tennessee River after seeing his girlfriend's car sinking and drowned in the fast-moving water. But authorities say he may not have realized the girlfriend had already escaped from the car and was helped to shore by a fisherman.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/AcO3OO) 25-year-old Christopher Heaton of Jasper, Tenn., died after the Tuesday evening rescue attempt near Bridgeport, Ala.

Police say he had driven to the spot where they were to meet near a boat ramp, when he saw her car sinking and immediately dove into the water.

Jackson County Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen says the woman, whose name wasn't released, was taken to a hospital in Scottsboro, Ala., where she was treated for bruises and hypothermia.

Would-be Walmart kidnapper on parole for voluntary manslaughter

BREMEN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Mary Shoemaker lives in the mobile home community in Austell where 25-year old Thomas Woods lives with his father.

Shoemaker was disturbed when she found out police arrested her neighbor and charged him with kidnapping a child.

"It's terrifying to know what he might have done to that child had he gotten away with her."

43:56
"I couldn't believe. I was like OH my God."

The attempted abduction happened at this Walmart in Bremen. According to police, the store's surveillance camera show Woods walking around Walmart. He walks out of the camera's view then run's back in carrying 7-year old Brittney Baxter.

Brittany Baxter

"I was just looking at the toys and talking and he just grabbed me."

But this feisty 7-year old didn't go without a fight.

16:34
"First I was screaming and he put his hand over my mouth and then I was just kicking…kicking…kicking."

Her kicking and screaming worked. You see in the video the man drops Brittany and takes off running.

He heads for the exit..she heads toward safety.

17:18
"I was running looking for my momma."

Police arrested Woods a few hours later after they issued a statewide lookout for his vehicle. When questioned by reporters, Woods said he's innocent.

"I didn't touch anybody. I didn't bother anybody. I was never there."

We found out this isn't Woods first run-in with the law. He was released from prison last October after serving 7 years for voluntary manslaughter.

EVEN With Woods back behind bars, Brittney says the next time she goes to Walmart she will not wander too far from her parents.
She says other children should take her advice if a stranger grabs them.

17:59
"Make sure you scream and kick and then go tell somebody that you trust. Try to be safe."

Second grader Brittney Baxter said she was looking at toys in a Walmart aisle when a 25-year-old man tried to kidnap her on Wednesday.
"I was kickin' and screamin' and then he put his hand over my mouth, but I kept kicking," Brittney Baxter said.
Bremen police arrested Thomas Andrew Woods. He is charged with attempted kidnapping and other charges are pending.
Brittney Baxter said she's thankful her parents and teachers taught her how to fight off a stranger.
Brittney's mother, Georgeann, said she was shocked that this could happen in her town.
"I just never would think something like that would happen in a town like this," Georgeann Baxter said.
Police said Woods was on parole for manslaughter.
