Man accused of threatening Obama faces new charge

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - (AP) -- An Uzbekistan national charged with threatening the life of President Barack Obama is now accused of providing aid to terrorism.
Federal prosecutors in Alabama filed the new charge Thursday against 22-year-old Ulugbek Kodirov, who was indicted last year in Birmingham.
The charge accuses Kodirov of acquiring weapons and explosives that were intended to be used in an attempt to kill Obama.
Documents show Kodirov has waived prosecution on the earlier indictment. He is due in court for a hearing on Friday afternoon, and records show Kodirov is changing his original plea of not guilty.
His lawyer declined comment.
Kodirov was arrested last July in suburban Birmingham after prosecutors said he obtained a rifle from an undercover agent with plans to kill Obama. Authorities say Kodirov was in the country illegally.
