TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities believe a man drowned when a sudden storm blew up while he was swimming in an area of the Tennessee River near the Alabama-Mississippi line.
The man's identity hasn't been released, pending notification of family. Officials said he was in his 40s and from outside the area.
Authorities say the man was visiting friends in the Riverton Rose Trail area of western Colbert County, and the group was out for a boat ride Monday when the storm struck.
Ken Blackstock, chief of the Riverton Rose Trail Volunteer Fire Department, says the man was boating with two families on the river and the group jumped out to swim. He says winds gusted at 40 to 45 mph and the waves kicked up to about 4 or 5 feet high.
