Former Calhoun County, Ala. DA Hubbard dies at 58

The Anniston Star
OXFORD, Ala. (AP) — Joe Hubbard, who as district attorney prosecuted some of Calhoun County's highest-profile criminal cases, died at his home in Oxford. He was 58.
Coroner Pat Brown said Hubbard died Monday of complications from cancer. Hubbard was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2008. He retired in March, but didn't cite his health as a reason for stepping down.
Friends and colleagues say Hubbard believed deeply that public servants should keep their public faces separate from their private lives.
Hubbard grew up in Oxford. He did his undergraduate studies at Auburn University, then attended the Cumberland School of Law.
Hubbard's best-known accomplishment may have been the prosecution of Donald Ray Wheat, who was convicted of the 2002 murder of four people in a Blockbuster video store.
