Alabama Rep. Owen Drake dies from cancer

Associated Press
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama state Rep. Owen Drake of Leeds has died after a battle with cancer. He was 75.
A Republican, Drake was serving a second term in the Alabama House from District 45 in Jefferson and St. Clair counties. A spokesman for the Alabama House, Clay Redden, said Drake died early Monday.
A retired Air Force chief master sergeant, Drake was a former member of the Leeds City Council and served for 13 years as communications director for the Jefferson County Commission.
Drake missed much of the 2011 session as he received treatments for cancer. He was given a standing ovation when he returned to the House chamber during the final days of the session in early June.
He was vice chairman of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
