Al. Reserve unit planes diverted because of Irene

By Associated Press
MONTGOMERY, Ala.  A deployment to provide airlift support in Central and South America got off to a soggy start for an Air Force Reserve unit from Montgomery when the unit arrived in Puerto Rico over the weekend, just before Hurricane Irene hit the island.
About 50 members of the 908th Airlift Wing and two C-130 cargo planes left Montgomery Saturday to participate in an ongoing mission to provide airlift support to U.S. embassies and other government agencies in central and south America.
Because of Irene, the cargo planes were diverted to MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa until the storm had passed Puerto Rico. Public Affairs Officer Lt. Col. Jerry Lobb said unit members are still dealing with power outages in Puerto Rico, but otherwise the mission is going ahead as planned.
